CHURCH MINISTRIES

Each ministry is a great opportunity to get to know your church better.

ALTAR GUILD

The Altar Guild assists in preparing the high and low altar for mass throughout the week. They are knowledgeable in the items used during mass and take the responsibility to make sure the items used during mass are returned in their original condition. They also wash the linens and lavabos used during mass.

CHOIR

The Choir ministers to St. John's using music during Sung and Solemn Masses. They encourage musical excellence in worship and lead the congregation in singing hymns and other songs. Choir rehearsals are usually held each Saturday afternoon from 2-4 PM in the church.

ACOLYTES

An acolyte assists in worship by carrying the processional cross and/or banners, lighting candles, holding the Gospel book, holding candles or torches,  swinging the thurible or carrying the incense boat other tasks as seen as required for the mass.

LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS (LEM)

The Lay Eucharistic Minister assists the priest or bishop administer the sacraments of Holy Communion, the Bread, and the Wine. They can also assist the priest to arrange the altar in preparation for the consecration of the Holy Sacraments.

LECTORS

Lectors, also known as readers, are responsible for reading out the Lessons (excerpts from the Bible or other texts) during mass. On Pentecost, our Lectors read the lessons in many different languages!

USHERS

Ushers greet as parishioners enter the church and make sure that visitors feel comfortable visiting St. John's. They are available to answer questions regarding the church and the mass, and also assist by ensuring the mass runs smoothly.

CHILDREN’S SERVICE

All children are invited to attend Sunday School and Children's Services. Our Sunday school teachers also assist in developing our children's faith.

GIFT PRESENTERS AND BEARERS

Our gift presenters and bearers collect the weekly offerings from the congregation during mass and other events. After the collections, they present the offering plate to the altar for a blessing.

SOUND TEAM

The sound team works behind the scene during events and mass as they try to balance out the best acoustics for the church using amplifiers, speakers and microphones.

CHIMERS

Using the 10 bells in the Bell Tower, the ringers play hymns and other well-known tunes on special occasions and selected Sundays.

EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN (ECW)

Episcopal Church Women (ECW) exists to empower women to live the life to which Christ called us by sharing His love through outreach, fellowship and spiritual growth, not only at St. John's but in other churches on Staten Island. They also volunteer to assist in church events.

MEN'S MINISTRY

All men of St. John's are invited to identify, develop, and release the unique gifts of men into the life and service of the church.

GARDENERS

Our gardeners use their green fingers to assist in beautifying the church property by planting flowers and plants around the church during spring and summer. They also periodically take care of the garden for general maintenance throughout the year.

COFFEE HOUR HOSTS

Our Coffee Hour Hosts prepare food and drinks to encourage fellowship between parishioners after mass. They rotate on a weekly basis to provide for our church members.

VOLUNTEERS

Our general volunteers help set up for church events and cleaning, and work around the week to ensure that the church runs its optimum performance. Anybody and everybody can volunteer!

WEBSITE ADMINISTRATOR

The website administrator is responsible for updating the website and monitoring St. John's social media accounts. Some computer and information technology knowledge is required.
