Prayer, Rite II (Thursday, February 29, 2024)

Leader: I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.

THE CONFESSION OF SIN

Leader: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Leader: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ,

strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life.

All: Amen.

THE INVITATORY AND PSALTER

Leader: O God, make speed to save us.

All: O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now,

and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia.

Please recite together.

O GRACIOUS LIGHT: PHOS HILARON

O gracious light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and

blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behld the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of Life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.

PSALM 74

Ut quid, Deus?

1 O God, why have you utterly cast us off? why is your wrath so hot against the sheep of your pasture?

2 Remember your congregation that you purchased long ago, the tribe you redeemed to be your inheritance, and Mount Zion where you dwell.

3 Turn your steps toward the endless ruins; the enemy has laid waste everything in your sanctuary.

4 Your adversaries roared in your holy place; they set up their banners as tokens of victory.

5 They were like men coming up with axes to a grove of trees; they broke down all your carved work with hatchets and hammers.

6 They set fire to your holy place; they defiled the dwelling-place of your Name and razed it to the ground.

7 They said to themselves, "Let us destroy them altogether." * They burned down all the meeting-places of God in the land.

8 There are no signs for us to see; there is no prophet left; * there is not one among us who knows how long.

9 How long, O God, will the adversary scoff? will the enemy blaspheme your Name for ever?

10 Why do you draw back your hand? why is your right hand hidden in your bosom?

11 Yet God is my King from ancient times, victorious in the midst of the earth.

12 You divided the sea by your might and shattered the heads of the dragons upon the waters;

13 You crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him to the people of the desert for food. 14 You split open spring and torrent; you dried up ever-flowing rivers.

15 Yours is the day, yours also the night; you established the moon and the sun.

16 You fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.

17 Remember, O Lord, how the enemy scoffed, how a foolish people despised your Name. 18 Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; never forget the lives of your poor. 19 Look upon your covenant; the dark places of the earth are haunts of violence.

20 Let not the oppressed turn away ashamed; let the poor and needy praise your Name.

21 Arise, O God, maintain your cause; * remember how fools revile you all day long.

22 Forget not the clamor of your adversaries, * the unending tumult of those who rise up against you.

THE FIRST LESSON: A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS 42:29-38

29 When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying, 30‘The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly to us, and charged us with spying on the land. 31But we said to him, “We are honest men, we are not spies. 32We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in the land of Canaan.” 33Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, “By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, take grain for the famine of your households, and go your way. 34Bring your youngest brother to me, and I shall know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will release your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.” ’35 As they were emptying their sacks, there in each one’s sack was his bag of money. When they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were dismayed. 36And their father Jacob said to them, ‘I am the one you have bereaved of children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has happened to me!’ 37Then Reuben said to his father, ‘You may kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.’ 38But he said, ‘My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm should come to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my grey hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

THE SONG OF SIMEON: NUNC DIMITTIS

Lord, you now have set your servant free * to go in peace as you have promised;

For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, * whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

THE SECOND LESSON: A READING FROM THE BOOK OF 1 CORINTHIANS 6:12-20

12 ‘All things are lawful for me’, but not all things are beneficial. ‘All things are lawful for me’, but I will not be dominated by anything. 13‘Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food’,* and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14And God raised the Lord and

will also raise us by his power. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, ‘The two shall be one flesh.’ 17But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. 19Or do you not know that your body is a temple* of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

A READING FROM THE GOSPEL OF MARK 4:21-34

21 He said to them, ‘Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lampstand? 22For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. 23Let anyone with ears to hear listen!’ 24And he said to them, ‘Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.’

26 He also said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’30 He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.

Leader: The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS

Please recite together.

THE APOSTLES' CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR PROTECTION:

Leader: O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who

labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ.

All: Amen.

A PRAYER FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE:

Leader: Almighty God, who created us in your image: Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen.

A PRAYER FOR THE HUMAN FAMILY:

All: O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Leader: Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake.

All: Amen.
