I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall. Psalm 16:7,8

The Confession of Sin

Leader: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbour.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life.

Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

O Gracious Light: Phos hilaron

O gracious light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of Life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Today’s Appointed Psalm and Lessons: Psalm 110, 132

1 The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, *

until I make your enemies your footstool."

2 The LORD will send the scepter of your power out of Zion, *

saying, "Rule over your enemies round about you.

3 Princely state has been yours from the day of your birth; *

in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you, like dew from the womb of the morning."

4 The LORD has sworn and he will not recant: *

"You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek."

5 The Lord who is at your right hand will smite kings in the day of his wrath; *

he will rule over the nations.

6 He will heap high the corpses; * he will smash heads over the wide earth.

7 He will drink from the brook beside the road; *

therefore he will lift high his head.

1 LORD, remember David, * and all the hardships he endured;

2 How he swore an oath to the LORD *

and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:

3 I will not come under the roof of my house, * nor climb up into my bed;

4 I will not allow my eyes to sleep, * nor let my eyelids slumber;

5 Until I find a place for the LORD, * a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob."

6 The ark! We heard it was in Ephratah; * we found it in the fields of Jearim.

7 Let us go to God's dwelling place; *

let us fall upon our knees before his footstool."

8 Arise, O LORD, into your resting-place, * you and the ark of your strength.

9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness; * let your faithful people sing with joy.

10 For your servant David's sake, * do not turn away the face of your Anointed.

11 The LORD has sworn an oath to David; * in truth, he will not break it:

12 A son, the fruit of your body * will I set upon your throne.

13 If your children keep my covenant and my testimonies

that I shall teach them, * their children will sit upon your throne for evermore."

14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; * he has desired her for his habitation:

15 This shall be my resting-place for ever; * here will I dwell, for I delight in her.

16 I will surely bless her provisions, * and satisfy her poor with bread.

17 I will clothe her priests with salvation, * and her faithful people will rejoice and sing.

18 There will I make the horn of David flourish; * I have prepared a lamp for my Anointed.

19 As for his enemies, I will clothe them with shame; * but as for him, his crown will shine."

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The First Lesson: A Reading from Wisdom 9: 1-12

"O God of my ancestors and Lord of mercy, who have made all things by your word, and by your wisdom have formed humankind to have dominion over the creatures you have made, and rule the world in holiness and righteousness, and pronounce judgment in uprightness of soul, give me the wisdom that sits by your throne, and do not reject me from among your servants. For I am your servant the son of your serving girl, a man who is weak and short-lived, with little understanding of judgment and laws; for even one who is perfect among human beings will be regarded as nothing without the wisdom that comes from you. You have chosen me to be king of your people and to be judge over your sons and daughters. You have given command to build a temple on your holy mountain, and an altar in the city of your habitation, a copy of the holy tent that you prepared from the beginning. With you is wisdom, she who knows your works and was present when you made the world; she understands what is pleasing in your sight and what is right according to your commandments. Send her forth from the holy heavens, and from the throne of your glory send her, that she may labor at my side, and that I may learn what is pleasing to you. For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me wisely in my actions and guard me with her glory. Then my works will be acceptable, and I shall judge your people justly, and shall be worthy of the throne of my father.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Song of Simeon: Nunc Dimittis, Luke 2:29-32

Lord, you now have set your servant free * to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, * whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Gospel of John 1: 9-14

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

** Reflections on the readings **

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Prayer for Protection

Leader: O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Prayer for Social Justice

Leader: Almighty God, who created us in your image: Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Prayer for the Human Family

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.
