Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Gloria in Excelsis

The Collect of the Day

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

The First Lesson: Acts 2:1-21

Acts 2:1-4 - Kru (No translation available)

Acts 2:17-21 Gaelic

Agus tíocfuigh chum críche ann sna laéthibh déigheanacha (a deir Día,) dóirtfidh mé dom Spiorad féin air gach uile fheóil: agus do dhéunuid bhur mic agus bhur ningheana fáidheadóireachd, agus do chífid bhur nógánaigh taisbéunta, agus bhur seandáoine aislingthe: Agus fós dóirtfidh mé dom Spiorad féin ar mo shearbhfhoghantuidhibh agus air mo bhanóglachuibh ann sna laéthibhsin; agus do dheanuid faidheadoireachd: Agus foillseochuidh mé iongantuis ar neamh shúas, agus comharthaidhe ar a dtalamh shíos; fuil, agus teine, agus gal deatuighe: Iompóchar an ghrían a ndorchadas, agus an ghealach a bhfuil, suil thiocfas an lá mór oirdheirc sin an Tighearna: Agus tiocfuidh chum críche, gidh bé ghuídhfeas ainm an Tighearna sláineochthair é.

English

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' "

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 104:25-35, 37: Benedic, anima mea

English

25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great.

27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it.

28 All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season.

29 You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth.

32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; * he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.

35 May these words of mine please him; * I will rejoice in the Lord.

37 Bless the Lord, O my soul. * Hallelujah!

The Second Lesson: Romans 8:14-17

English

All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ-- if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Sequence Hymn: Where charity and love prevail, Page 24

The Gospel: John 14:8-17, 25-27

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you."

"I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon: The Rev’d. Hank Tuell

The Renewal of Baptismal Promises

Please stand as you are able

Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

I will, with God’s help.

Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

I will, with God’s help.

Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?

I will, with God’s help.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself?

I will, with God’s help.

Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?

I will, with God’s help.

The Prayers of the People

Gracious Lord, we meet together to celebrate the gift of your Holy Spirit to the church. Bless us as we seek to serve you. Fill us with your Spirit, that we might be your voices, hands and presence in the world, and draw others into your kingdom,

“Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

We pray for our Church that at this time we may be renewed by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and reach out to one another as true disciples with faith, love and hope. Help us to understand our weaknesses and our differences, so we can build a strong and loving parish. We pray for Christians everywhere, that they may be united in one Church through the action of the Holy Spirit.

“Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

Your Holy Spirit gave your apostles the gift and power of forgiveness. Grant us that gift, so we may we use it to heal a broken world.

Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

Most Holy Spirit, grant an extra measure of Your gifts to those who lead us in Your Church, as they strive to guide our spiritual journey through these trying and uncertain time.

“Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

We pray for all those who fear for their lives, for the victims of violence and war, and for those weighed down by troubles and anxieties. We pray that we may reach out to others with hope and care.

“Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

Let us pray for all who are lonely, weak and vulnerable, that they may be aware that you are with them in their troubles. We pray for those who cannot cope on their own, and all who ask for our prayers whatever their need may be.

“Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

Almighty God, You carry the burdens of our lives in Your hands. Deliver from illness and suffering all who cry to You for release. Hear us on behalf of the sick, the dying and those who mourn. For those in need of our prayers, remembering especially: Madeleine Marchetti, Brian Orlick, John Owens, Kimberly Phillips, Lynn Phimister, Robert Ross, Walter Robert Shields, Diane Sprosty, Jennifer Sprosty, James Sutler, Christopher Traina, and for all those on our prayer list and for all who are suffering from Covid-19 that the Spirit will renew in them the gift of life. Answer Your people O Lord, and deliver them from their infirmities and their grief by Your grace.

“Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

Lord, we ask you to be with those who struggle to find adequate food and clean water, clothing and shelter and the other basic needs of life, and we pray that governments and agencies, including the church, will reach out to change the course of their history, sharing from the abundance held by others. Lord, grant us the courage and generosity to be part of the solution working with local charities and organizations reaching out around the globe.

“Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

Give sharp eyes, wise hearts, and generous hands to our elected and appointed leaders, in government and in all walks of life where they are given authority and power. Help each of us to notice our neighbour’s distress, and give us the grace and the willingness to show them mercy, especially during these difficult times.

“Lord in your mercy, Hear Our Prayer”

Lord, we ask for your prayers for all who are forgotten and neglected - those who are so easy to forget – comfort them. Children who lay abandoned and abused - protect them. Communities who suffer at the hands of prejudice - shield them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body and spirit, and turn their sorrow into joy.

“Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer”

Lord, we ask that you give guidance to all who are seeking employment, those struggling with addictions, and troubled youth. Give them courage, lead them to new opportunities and fill them with hope.

“Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer”

We pray for all who serve and protect us, for all medical personnel, police, firefighters and members of the military, that God will keep them safe, guide them in their service and renew their spirit, especially as they work through the trials of Covid-19.

“Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer”

Good and gracious God, send forth your spirit into our hearts. Wipe away the fear between churches, nations and families. Tear down the walls that divide us, and make us one. Help us to use all your gifts wisely as true witnesses to your Love. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Concluding Collect

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Confession

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbour.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

Amen.

The Peace

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

The Announcements

Offertory Hymn:When Christ was lifted from the earth, Page 25

The Great Thanksgiving – B

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus & Benedictus: S-128

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Virgin Mary, Saint John and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior has taught us, we are bold to sing,

The Lord's Prayer

The Breaking of the Bread

The Presider breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
